JRF Full Form

JRF full form is described as Junior Research Fellowships. It is a popular scholarship or fellowship programme provided in a number of nations, including India and the United Kingdom. JRF provides financial assistance to those conducting research in their particular professions.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Qualifications in Education

• A post-graduate degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant discipline from a recognised university or institution is often required.
• The exact minimum percentage or grade required may vary, however, a minimum of 55% or higher is commonly expected.
• Some JRF programmes may include topic requirements, such as a degree in the same or a relevant field of study to the research project.

2. Age Restrictions

• For JRF eligibility, an age limit is frequently specified. The age limit varies by country and programme, although it is commonly between 28 and 30 years old.
• Age relaxations may be applicable for reserved categories or applicants with disabilities, depending on the guidelines of the particular country.

3. Criteria for Selection

   Qualification exams:

• JRF eligibility is frequently decided through qualifying tests. National-level tests such as the National Eligibility Test (NET), UGC-CSIR NET, and similar examinations unique to the country or institution are examples of these exams.
• To be considered eligible for JRF, candidates must obtain the minimum qualifying marks or percentage in these exams.

    Interviews:

• After passing the written exam, candidates may be asked to attend a personal interview or viva voce as part of the selection process in some situations. Therefore, the interview evaluates the candidate’s research abilities, subject understanding, and fit for the JRF programme.

Assistance Type

According to the design, the Junior Research Fellowship will begin with a two-year term. Specialists examine the individual’s work once the two-year period has concluded. If a person’s research work is found sufficient, their time extends for the next three years under the increased consideration of the Senior Research Fellowship. If the first two years of work seem not enough, the student is given an extra year to improve. Throughout this time, him or her is referred to as an undergraduate research fellow. In these cases, the work is reassessed after three years, and hence, if there is an improvement, the fellow is awarded two more years under the SRF.

Approval Process

Colleges, institutes, and also universities use the UGC-CSIR/NET tests to evaluate applicants for JRFs for PhD or MPhil positions. After getting their UGC NET or UGC-CSIR eligibility certificate, the candidate must join an MPhil or PhD programme as soon as practicable, but no later than two years later. Following completion of the aforementioned stages, the Joining Report, the actual amount of the fellowship is calculated. The candidate’s certification, attested by the supervisor or head of the department, must be sent through the registrar, principal, or director, together with a verified copy of the NET Certificate.

Salary and Job Titles:

1. CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET): 

 A JRF selected through the CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) will be paid Rs 31,000 per month for the first two years. The university or institution will also get an annual stipend of Rs. 20,000 per fellow for unforeseen expenses.

2. SRF (NET):

If the fellow is registered for a PhD, the fellowship will be upgraded to SRF (NET) after two years as a JRF, and the stipend will be increased to 35,000/- each month for the third and following years, based on an assessment of the fellows’ research progress/achievements via an interview by an Expert Committee comprised of the guide, the fellows, and the guide’s supervisor, head of the department, and an External Member from outside the university/institution who is an expert in the relevant field, not to exceed.

3. Fellows should have published work by the conclusion of their third year. This will be a significant quantitative and also qualitative component in measuring the candidate’s development. A fellowship will be held. And also if the Committee judges that JRF’s work cannot be improved or that him or her has not applied for a PhD, the study will be cancelled.

4. Furthermore, if development is insufficient at the end of the approved period, the fellowship will be cancelled. According to the recommendation in the guidance and also the status report (Annexure-IV), the SRF (NET) tenure will be extended for a fourth year.

5. HRDG, CSIR:

JRF and SRF(NET) positions are limited to five years. This category includes fellowships awarded by the UGC, DST, DBT, ICMR, ICAR, or also any other sponsoring agency or institution. The EMR Division of HRDG, CSIR will issue an order for continuation at the same stipend rate as SRF(NET).

6. An extension may not be granted if the fellow does not acknowledge the CSIR’s support for his or her research report. The term of a Research Fellow will end on the last day of the month after it begins on the first of the month. Moreover, the Fellowship will be terminated on the final day of the month in which the Fellow began.
