What is the full form of RAM?

RAM stands for Random Access Memory.  The use of RAM is to read and write into memory. It is the type of memory that loses its memory when the computer gets turned off. RAM is necessary for every computer because it is used to store and recover data.

History of RAM

  • Firstly, In 1947, RAM’s first form was created by Williams Tube.
  • Information was saved in electrical charge dots on the front of the Cathode Ray Tube.
  • In the same year 1947, the second generation of RAM was created which was named magnetic core memory.
  • Owner of numerous patents, Frederick Viehe was listed as who has carried the bulk of the development effort.
  • Lastly, In 1868, the initial discovery of RAM was done by Robert Dennard which is now known as the solid-state memory.

Types of RAM

RAM is divided into two parts which are:

1. SRAM

SRAM stands for Static Random Access Memory. Also, SRAM is known as static as no action or change. Cache memories are also used in SRAM. Moreover, you don’t have to refresh the data for being stored in SRAM.

2. DRAM

DRAM stands for Dynamic Random Access Memory, Also, DRAM is known as action or constant change. Moreover, for saving the data you have to refresh the data for being stored in DRAM.

Advantages of RAM:

1. Fast Access:

When compared to other forms of storage, such as hard drives or solid-state drives (SSDs), RAM offers significantly faster access to data. Rapid and effective data retrieval and manipulation are also made possible by RAM’s ability to transfer data to the CPU (Central Processing Unit) at rates measured in nanoseconds.

2. Volatile Memory:

RAM is volatile memory, which means that when the computer is turned off or restarted, its data are gone. Although this could appear to be a drawback, it really has advantages including performance and range.  Hence, RAM can be swiftly written to and read from thanks to volatility, giving active programmes and data a brief workspace.

3. Multitasking:

RAM makes multitasking possible, which enables the computer to execute many programmes at once. RAM may be used to store each program and the data it needs, enabling rapid access and also easy switching between programs. Moreover, RAM makes multitasking more fluid by reducing the frequency of data transfers to slower storage media.

4. Data Cache:

RAM serves as a temporary storage location for frequently accessed information from storage devices. A program or file is loaded into RAM when accessed for quicker retrieval during later operations. Hence, this caching strategy lessens the dependence on a slower storage medium, accelerating system performance as a whole.

5. Effective File and Application Execution:

As files and programs are put into RAM, they carry out more quickly and also effectively. The CPU has immediate access to the data it requires, which decreases wait times and also enhances system responsiveness. Additionally, RAM makes it possible for games and programs to load more quickly, improving the user experience overall.
