An FIR serves as the starting point for any investigation since it provides the police with the authority to proceed promptly to the scene of the occurrence, make inquiries, and take additional action if necessary. An FIR ensures that offences are reported to the police as soon as possible and aids in more rapid and effective investigations. Types of FIR

1. General FIR

2. Zero FIR

In India, a Zero F.I.R. is logged at any police station without a serial number, regardless of the jurisdiction from whence the location originates. After the Nirbhaya Case in 2013, Justice Verma proposed the implementation of Zero F.I.R.

3. Cross FIR 

A cross F.I.R. is one in which both parties to a crime file F.I.Rs against one another in connection with the same occurrence.

4. Multiple FIR 

The accused will become embroiled in several criminal processes for the same alleged offence when a single party files multiple First Information Reports against the same defendant based on the same facts and accusations.

A Content of FIR 

  • The Date, Time, and Place of the Incident are all listed in a FIR.
  • Name, address, and information about the witness or victim are all included in an FIR.
  • The accused’s name, residence, and other information are all included in a FIR.
  • It includes a brief description of what was done and for whom.
  • It includes information on the weapons used in the crime as well as the injuries the victims suffered.
  • Details about further witnesses who saw the incident happen are included.
  • It includes the witness’s signature and their cellphone numbers, which aid the police in their investigation should it be necessary.
